The 7 steps of Effective Executive Coaching

Customer Reviews

"A great, highly readable book, 24 Jul 2006"

Reviewer: Casey ( UK )

"This is a clearly written and very thorough guide to coaching, but with a potential translation of the techniques to all sorts of leadership situations. But it's the model that's so useful; not limiting the discussion to the usual GROW model (Goal definition, reality check, options and What next), but expanding it.
The ACHIEVE model helps people to get to a clear understanding of what they want to do with their lives - and eschews the idea that what presents itself first is in fact what you should go for.

ACHIEVE stands for Assessing the current situation (to help you identify the things which are really holding you back - not just what first presents itself as "the issue "); Creative brainstorming of alternatives (helping you get out of the "stuck" state); Honing goals (giving priority to the things you want to tackle); Initiating options (helping you identify what behaviour will help you to get to your goal); Eva luating options (deciding which action to take); Valid action plan design (a clear plan with measurable steps) and finally, Encouraging momentum (keeping you on track) .

The book is chock-full of really helpful case studies to show not only coaches what can be achieved (no pun intended) and coachees that it's about THEM - not just their work. The case studies also demonstrate that this book has been written by, and for, practitioners - no theoretical wanderings here, although many of theories that underline the practical tools have their basis in sound academic theory from a variety of disciplines such as NLP, Gestalt, Goal theory, creativity and psychology.

A great, highly readable book."
